Kristina Neely
Kristina Neely, Ph.D. – Director
Kristina A. Neely, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the School of Kinesiology and Director of the Brain and Behavior Lab. Her expertise is in human neuroscience, with a focus on how the brain controls movement in adults. She is especially interested in motor tasks that involve a cognitive component, and tasks that are associated with specific brain regions.

Research Focus: Dr. Neely is interested in using motor output to index and evaluate cognitive and mental health in adults. She uses an interdisciplinary and translational approach to discover how movement, cognition, and mental health intersect.

Kathryn Riis Mayfield
Kathryn Riis Mayfield, Ph.D. Student

Kathryn is a Ph.D. Candidate in Kinesiology with a background in Exercise Science (B.S.) and Biomechanics (M.S.) from Auburn University. Her research focuses on how physical activity can enhance physical, cognitive, and mental health in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Kathryn’s work explores how different types of exercise influence mood, executive function, and motor skills, aiming to design inclusive, evidence-based programs that promote improved health. With over eight years of research experience, she has led data collection using motor assessments, cognitive tests, mental health surveys, and exercise interventions. Kathryn is passionate about making physical activity more accessible for neurodivergent populations and is committed to improving mental, physical, and cognitive health through personalized activity opportunities.

Cody Baerlocher
Cody Baerlocher

Cody joined the lab in Spring 2025. He is majoring in Neuroscience and plans to pursue medical school after completing his undergraduate degree. Cody is interested in studying how health and exercise affect cognitive functions such as learning, memory, and sleep. By exploring the impact of lifestyle factors on brain performance, he aims to better understand how healthy habits support both mental and physical resilience.

Mackenzie Edwards
Mackenzie Edwards

Mackenzie joined the lab in Summer 2025. She is majoring in Exercise Science with a minor in Business and intends to pursue a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree. As a lab volunteer, Mackenzie contributes to Kathryn Riis Mayfield’s study on exercise interventions for adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Her broader goal is to provide adaptive care, with a particular interest in the physiological and cognitive impacts of exercise and rehabilitation, as well as the barriers—physical, social, mental, and cognitive—that limit participation and progress.

Katie Guy
Katie Guy

Katie joined the lab in Spring 2025. She is majoring in Neuroscience and plans to attend medical school after graduation. Katie is interested in neurodivergence and neurotypical differences, especially how the brain influences movement and actions.

Alyssa Hattenstein
Alyssa Hattenstein

Alyssa joined the lab in Fall 2025 and is majoring in Exercise Science. She holds certifications from NASM, AFAA, and FITOUR in both Primary and Advanced Pilates. After graduation, Alyssa plans to pursue a career as an Anesthesiologist Assistant, combining her passion for health with a drive to make a clinical impact.

Ella Uebelacker

Ella joined the lab in Spring 2025. She is majoring in Exercise Science and plans to attend physical therapy school after graduation. Outside of class, Ella is passionate about group fitness and working with children and individuals with disabilities. She teaches various fitness classes at the Auburn Recreation and Wellness Center for students, faculty, and EAGLES, and enjoys learning about the mental and physical benefits of an active lifestyle.

Anna Watson
Anna Watson

Anna joined the lab in Fall 2024. She is a junior majoring in Neuroscience and minoring in Biological Sciences. Anna is especially passionate about working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which inspires her goal of pursuing medical school after graduation.
