Our master’s programs are designed to broaden and strengthen your educational skills. Build your abilities and knowledge to become an outstanding educator through work with our strong mentoring-minded faculty who care about your success. As a graduate of our M.Ed. program, you’ll be eligible to apply for Alabama Class A professional educator certification.

Our M.S. non-certification program provides an interdisciplinary graduate-level education for community-based or international educators who do not wish to gain teacher certification/licensure in the United States.

If you have a bachelor’s degree in English or a related field and want to teach, check our Alternative Certification M.Ed. We can help you earn your master’s and teaching certification!

M.Ed. Degree Overview

M.Ed. Degree Overview

The M.Ed. degree leads to recommendation for Class A Alabama professional educator certification.

Coursework — 30 hours

  • English education and professional courses* — 18 hours

  • Teaching field courses — 12 hours

*RSED 6000/6006 Advanced Survey of Exceptionality is required if a survey of special education course was not previously completed.

Alternative M.Ed. Overview

Alternative M.Ed. Degree Overview

The Alternative M.Ed. degree leads to recommendation for Class A Alabama professional educator certification.

Coursework — 30 hours

  • Teaching field courses* — 12 hours

  • Professional studies* — 18 to 21 hours

*Undergraduate courses may be required by your advisor committee for your plan of study.  This coursework is in addition to the total hours noted above and must be completed prior to Clinical Residency.

Coursework — 30 hours

  • English education courses — 9 hours

  • Orientation to teaching and learning – 1 hour

  • Advisor-approved instructional design course — 3 hours

  • Capstone in teaching and learning – 2 hours
