Short Bio
Megan Burton, Ph.D., is a Professor of Elementary Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Auburn University. She is a past president of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators.
Her research and outreach interests are STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education, elementary mathematics teachers' identities, beliefs and practices, and inclusive practices. Currently, she is researching inclusive STEM education and preparing teacher candidates to effectively meet the needs of their students in inclusive STEM settings. Dr. Burton has facilitated elementary STEM Camps at Auburn University, in China, and virtually. She has presented at numerous international and national venues and has published in venues for teachers and for researchers including: Journal of Teacher Education, Learning Disabilities Quarterly, Teaching Children Mathematics, Young Children, and School Science and Mathematics. She is also co-author of Making mathematics standards accessible to students with diverse learning needs: Using the concrete-representational-abstract sequence. Dr. Burton teaches students to build on the strengths that each learner brings to the classroom. Her teaching utilizes this same approach.
Most of Dr. Burton's childhood was spent in Frankfort, Kentucky. She spent ten years teaching first through fourth grade in the Atlanta and Birmingham areas. Her experience teaching in inclusive classrooms and working with multi-lingual learners are integrated into the work she does now to support teachers as they seek to teach mathematics for all learners. She enjoys travel, spending time with nieces and nephews, and spoiling her two rescue dogs.
