Engagement

Dr. Kuehne's outreach includes a multi-year continuing program titled, "Learning to Teach." (LTT). Each spring, freshman music education students plan and teach Pk-6 music lessons in a local area rural school, often teaching in pairs. In their sophomore fall they continue teaching, but often teach on their own. Within this structure, where Pk-6 classroom teachers serve as mentors, they learn to teach using a somewhat literal view of a constructivist approach. They learn to plan and teach by planning and teaching, which in turn supports developing their teaching personalities and gaining comfort in classrooms. The program was awarded a NAfME research support grant and over $16,000 in support from Tiger Giving Day.
