WINGS

The purpose of the WINGS, or Warmhearted Individuals Nurturing Great Success, Peer Mentor Program is to facilitate a volunteer movement at Auburn that creates opportunities for friendships, personal/social interactions, employment support, academic support, and leadership development between traditional Auburn University students and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities enrolled in the EAGLES program. Furthermore, the WINGS peer mentors support the vision and mission of the EAGLES program through fostering genuine relationships during an EAGLES student’s Auburn experience and beyond. The goal of the Auburn University Chapter of the WINGS Organization, is to promote friendships and mentorships between members of Auburn University’s student body and those in the EAGLES program. The WINGS Organization of Auburn seeks to contribute positively to the social and psychological development of all persons involved and to enhance the idea of a genuinely diverse and inclusive community.

Please review the WINGS peer mentor opportunities available below. If you are between the ages of 18-26, apply to become a WINGS peer mentor!

Four Levels of WINGS Mentorship

There are two types of mentorship responsibilities within the WINGS program. Potential mentors should select the type that best fits their availability and interest.

Academic WINGS have a set, consistent schedule. These WINGS attend EAGLES and/or University classes with EAGLES students and model appropriate classroom behavior.

Employment WINGS have a set, consistent schedule. These WINGS serve as job coaches for students, and model appropriate job skills. WINGS attend assigned jobsites.

Health and Wellness WINGS provide opportunities for connections to peers, events, and/or activities related to health and wellness, suggestions for ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle, and assist the EAGLES with exercise, grocery shopping, or outdoor activities.

These WINGS do not have a set, consistent schedule. Social WINGS primarily see students in social settings, and model appropriate friendship and social skills.

These WINGS receive monetary compensation, and reside in residences with EAGLES students. IL WINGS model appropriate Independent Living Skills
