The Early Childhood Teacher Education Program has operated Summer Enrichment for over 25 years providing developmentally appropriate educational experiences for children aged 3.5 – 7.5 years of age.

The program is directed by Dr. Sean Durham, associate professor and coordinator of the early childhood program in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching. The daily activities are supervised by a masters level lead teacher and graduate assistants. Undergraduate students working toward teacher certification plan and guide experiences for the children, observe their work and play, and document their progress.

Summer Enrichment is rooted in the belief that each child is competent, creative, and thoroughly capable of constructing his/her own understanding of the world. Simply put, Summer Enrichment is about what children can do – in contrast to what adults often must persuade children to do. Each day, children are welcomed into a richly prepared physical environment that includes play and learning centers. As children play, adults observe and document what children are playing about and use this information to plan additional opportunities to explore, gather information, and deepen their connections to the subjects. Often, learning projects are identified and developed throughout the course of the program. Children are invited to represent their learning and understanding using a variety of media including writing, drawing, and art. In Summer Enrichment, we also attend to children’s social and emotional selves and help them build good relationships with others.
