Guest lecturer to talk teacher research and writing

October 2009

Patricia Lambert Stock, professor emerita at Michigan State University, will deliver a campus lecture on action research as a means of improving the teaching of writing.

Stock, who will deliver her lecture Wednesday, October 28, at 10 a.m. in Student Center room 2310, is a special guest of the College of Education's National Leadership Council and the Sun Belt Writing Project  link to external web site, a professional development organization for teachers that works to raise student achievement by strengthening their writing skills. The lecture, which is open to anyone interested in teacher research and the teaching of writing, will focus on research conducted by the National Writing Project link to external web site examining the nature, sources, enactment and effects of teacher inquiry workshops.

As a visiting professor at the University of Maryland and director of its National Writing Project site, Stock has drawn attention to the ways in which teacher research can improve K-12 education. During her visit to Auburn University, Stock will also provide a workshop for 20 invited area educators on "Learning to Write by Writing to Learn.''

A former professor of writing, rhetoric and American cultures at Michigan State, Stock began her professional career as a high school English teacher. She is a past president of the National Council of Teachers of English.
