Preparing students for Education Interview Day

October 2009

Auburn University's Career Development Services will bring opportunity to the doorstep of College of Education students nearing graduation and searching for employment.

Career Development Services will host the first of two Education Interview Day sessions Tuesday, October 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center. The event brings education students from Auburn and Auburn University Montgomery together with representatives of local and regional school systems for a day of job interviews and networking opportunities.

During the fall 2008 Education Interview Day, nearly 150 students participated in a total of 580 job interviews with representatives of 35 school systems and agencies.

Melvin K. Smith '87, special events coordinator for Career Development Services and a three-time College of Education graduate, offered these five essential tips for students participating in the event:

  1. Be mentally prepared for the interview process, well-dressed in business attire and approach interviews with the willingness to sell yourself to prospective employers.
  2. Before Education Interview Day, learn as much as possible about the school systems for which you would be interested in working.
  3. Keep an open mind in evaluating all employment opportunities.
  4. Network with as many different school system representatives as possible.
  5. Arrive early and keep every appointment you have scheduled.

Students can view a list of the schools systems that will be represented at the event here. Career Development Services also features a resume writing tip sheet here.
