Guest lecturer addresses topic of congestive heart failure during campus visit

In his role as chair of the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine's Guest Lecture Tour  link to external web site, Dr. John Quindry wanted to find experts who could deliver compelling presentations about their research while also making the science accessible to the general public.

Quindry, an assistant professor of exercise science in the Department of Kinesiology, succeeded in lining up such a guest for the lecture tour's stop at Auburn University on Monday, Sept. 28.

Dr. Russell Moore, a professor of integrative physiology at the University of Colorado, will deliver a presentation entitled, "Aberrant cardiolipin metabolism in heart failure: The problem and a possible solution.''

While the title may sound intimidating to a layperson, Quindry said the dialogue will be open and accessible to all and that Auburn students, faculty and members of the general public can all derive benefit from attending. The free event will be held at 3 p.m. in Haley Center 1203.

"It should be of interest to medical professionals, students, faculty and the general public,'' Quindry said. "Congestive heart failure is the underlying topic. Congestive heart failure touches many people we know. Dr. Moore is a preeminent scientist in that area, mixing basic cardiac research and exercise science.

"He's a very respected researcher and presenter. When considering speaker invitations, I wanted someone who performs cutting edge research and can also disseminate the research in a palatable way to a broad audience.''

Auburn will serve as the first stop on the Southeast American College of Sports Medicine Guest Lecture Tour. Moore's presentation is co-sponsored by Auburn University's Special Lecture Committee.

Moore currently serves as interim vice chancellor for research at the University of Colorado and as an adjunct professor of cardiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver.

Quindry, who recently received a National Institutes of Health grant to aid his research in the field of heart attack protection, said he hopes Moore's visit will touch off interest in the formation of an interdisciplinary cardiac research group at Auburn.

"It would provide a semi-annual venue for us to get together and hear about research and talk about how we can get interdepartmental and intercollegiate research projects going,'' Quindry said.
