'Mondays with Melvin' provide valuable career guidance for students
August 2009
Education majors who will soon be testing the job market should plan on spending "Mondays with Melvin,'' a newly-created series of events that will provide students with essential career-building guidance.
Melvin K. Smith `87, special events coordinator for Career Development Services and a three-time College of Education graduate, developed a series of four workshops that will enable students to learn more about such topics as networking and preparing for job interviews. The "Mondays with Melvin'' series will begin in September and conclude in November.
The first session, "Networking for the Right Teaching Position,'' will be held on September 14, from 6 to 7 p.m., in Student Center Ballroom B. The speakers will be Larissa Bockenek, a veteran teacher and speech pathologist, and Marc Guy, director of human resources for the Coweta County (Ga.) school system.
The second session, "Completing Applications and Writing the Resume,'' will be held September 21, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Student Center room 2227. Debra G. Williams, coordinator of teacher placement and recruitment for the Alabama Department of Education, will be the guest speaker.
The third event in the series, "Interviewing and Getting Selected,'' will be held October 5, from 6 to 7 p.m., in Student Center room 2227. Addie Swinney, director of human resources for Auburn City Schools, will be the presenter.
The "Mondays with Melvin'' series will conclude with the "AU Grad Educators Panel'' on November 9, from 6 to 7 p.m. The location and the participants have yet to be finalized.
