New course offers military veterans pathways to success

June 2009

In fall 2009, Academic Support will offer a one credit hour class for Auburn University students who are military veterans, active duty, National Guard or reserves.

The course, UNIV 1050-VTR (CRN 18017) "Success Strategies,'' will be taught by Dr. David DiRamio, an assistant professor in the College of Education who has previously worked with students with military experience. With a focus on making a successful transition from military service to the university setting, the "Success Strategies'' course will deepen students' understanding of the learning process and the role higher education plays in shaping their lives. It will be held Mondays, from 4 to 4:50 p.m.

Through the course, student-veterans making the transition to an intensive academic setting will receive instruction on such topics as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, problem solving, time management, personal development, reading and writing. The "Success Strategies'' course is in keeping with the vision of the Auburn University Veterans Learning Community, which will welcome its first cohort in the fall of 2010.

Developed by DiRamio, the Veterans Learning Community will help student-veterans relearn effective study habits, improve time management and strengthen reading and test-taking skills. The learning community also affords the opportunity to connect with peers. The 2010 Veterans Learning Community will be open to students who need to fulfill their general education requirements in English composition and history. Members of the Veterans Learning Community will be co-enrolled in three courses and address aspects of the military-to-university transition throughout the year.

Students interested in the "Success Strategies'' course should contact Chris Wyckoff in Academic Support at (334) 844-5972 or by e-mail at wyckoct@auburn.edu.
