Dr. John Quindry

A Department of Kinesiology professor's research in the field of heart attack protection will receive a boost from a $37,979 grant from the National Institutes of Health  .

Dr. John Quindry, an assistant professor of exercise science, will use the grant to further understanding of heart physiology and biochemistry during a heart attack. His project, entitled "Mitochondrial KATP channels, exercise, and cardioprotection,'' will explore the prevention and mitigation of heart attack impact by using a model of exercise. The experiments will investigate heightened mitochondrial KATP channel activity is an essential protective component of exercised hearts.

The project will ultimately increase understanding of why an exercised heart muscle is protected against heart attack damage.  In addition to underscoring the importance of exercise as a means of lifestyle and health improvement, the study could yield valuable information applicable in pharmaceutical interventions against debilitative heart damage.
