College finalizes 2009 summer program schedule

The College of Education will offer something for everyone this summer in the form of camps, courses and workshops intended for the academic enrichment of adults and children. The following summer programs are offered by the Department of Curriculum and Teaching:
Because Writing Matters
A workshop that affords school administrators the opportunity to discuss the role of writing in their respective schools.
Target Age Level: Adult
Fees: $20 (or free if enrolled through East Alabama Regional Inservice Center)

Early Career Institute: A Professional Study and Discussion Community for First-Year Teachers
This workshop addresses the needs and concerns of teachers entering the profession for the first time.
Target Age Level: Adult
Fees: $20 (or free if enrolled through East Alabama Regional Inservice Center)
Dates and Times: June 22-June 26, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Early Childhood Education Summer Enrichment Program
This year's program will focus on "Change Inside and Out" with daily learning activities aligned with Alabama's language arts, science, math and reading Course of Study Standards and strategic teaching promoting student inquiry and discovery.
Target Age Level: The program serves children 4-8.
Fees: $100 per session, per child, plus a non-refundable $50registration fee per child (in addition to the $100 session fee).
Dates and Times: 8:00 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday for two three-week sessions (children may be enrolled for one or both sessions).
Session 1: June 8th-11th, June 15th-18th and June 22nd-25th
(*will not meet the week of June 29th-July 3rd)
Session 2: July 6th-9th, July 13th-16th and July 20th-23rd
Deadline: The program has reached capacity and how has a waiting list. Children are enrolled on a first-come, first-serve basis. The enrollment capacity is 50 children per session.
Integrating Required Curriculum Skills and Needs Through Our Writing and Reading Lessons
This workshop addresses the questions and concerns English and language arts teachers have about designing lessons that meet SCOS standards and school curriculum requirements through the writing and reading lessons delivered in the classroom.
Target Age Level: Adult

Professional Book Study
This professional book study/discussion group will address current classroom and teacher needs and concerns.

Summer Reading Program
The Summer Reading Program is designed to help kindergarten, elementary or middle school children struggling with decoding, fluency or reading comprehension.
Target Age Level: K-2 beginners, with some places for children in grades 3-6
Fees: $80 for the 12-session program.
Dates and Times: June 10-July 22 for K-2, Monday-Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.; June 11-July 21 for grades 2-6, Tuesday-Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

Sun Belt Summer Invitational Institute
Participation in the SII offers fine tuning of participants' repertoires, study of successful approaches to writing instruction, and professional renewal.
Target Age Level: Adult
Fees: N/A
Stipend: $1,200 ($300 upon completion of pre-institute 8 a.m.-4 p.m. March 28, 2009, and small group March 30-May 31, 2009; $600 upon completion of institute June 8-26, 2009; and $300 May 1, 2010, upon completion of a year of advancing writing).
Credit: Tuition payment for six Auburn University graduate credits available in place of $1,200 fellowship (admission to the Auburn University Graduate School by March 15, 2009 required).

Writing to Learn, and Learning to Write: Writing in the Domains of Math, Science, History, The Social Sciences, The Arts, and English
Join other K-16 teachers and instructors from all disciplines in studying and discussing the current techniques and strategies for incorporating writing into programs.

Transforming East Alabama Mathematics (TEAM-Math) Summer Institute
This institute will provide teachers who have attended the initial TEAM-Math two-week summer institute with additional resources, pedagogical strategies, assessment techniques and other instructional tools related to teaching mathematics effectively.
Target Age Level: Adult K-12 teachers
Fees: None (teachers will receive stipends and mileage reimbursements)

Transforming East Alabama Mathematics (TEAM-Math) Teacher Leader Academy
Through initial funding provided by the National Science Foundation, 8-10 teacher leaders within high-needs school districts who have demonstrated success in improving student learning will receive an annual stipend of $10,000, as well as reimbursement for tuition to complete an advanced degree in secondary mathematics education, work on their leadership skills with other teachers and attend workshops.
Target Age Level: Adult teachers of Grades 9-12
