College salutes outstanding faculty, staff and students

The College of Education recently honored eight outstanding students, six faculty members, three staff members and one graduate during its annual Spring Awards Ceremony
.
Two faculty members received teaching awards established by Dr. Gerald and Mrs. Emily Leischuck, both 1964 graduates of the college and retired Auburn University administrators. Dr. Margaret Shippen, associate professor in the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, Counseling/School Psychology, earned the Emily and Gerald Leischuck Outstanding Undergraduate Faculty Teaching Award. Dr. Wendi Weimar, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology, earned the Emily and Gerald Leischuck Outstanding Graduate Faculty Teaching Award.
Three more awards were presented to honor outstanding early career achievement, research and outreach by faculty. Dr. JoEllen Sefton, assistant professor in the Department of Kinesiology, earned the Outstanding Faculty Early Career Award. Dr. Marilyn Strutchens, a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching and co-director of Transforming East Alabama Mathematics
(TEAM-Math), earned the Outstanding Faculty Award for Research. Dr. Alyson Whyte, an assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching and director of the Sun Belt Writing Project, earned the Outstanding Faculty Award for Outreach.
The college also presented newly-created awards for faculty and staff commitment to diversity. Dr. Judith Lechner, a professor in the Department of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Technology, and Nancy Evans, administrative support associate in the Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, Counseling/School Psychology, received the faculty and staff awards, respectively.
Cynthia Duffie, coordinator of business and administrative services in the Office of the Dean, earned the Outstanding Staff Award for Office Administration, while Robin Martin, a student services assistant in the Department of Kinesiology, earned the Outstanding Administrative/Professional Staff Award.
Alabama Superintendent of Education Joe Morton `69 received the Outstanding Alumni Award in recognition of his commitment to education and professional excellence. Morton is the third in a line of College of Education graduates who have served as Alabama state superintendent of education for 34 consecutive years. A secondary social science education graduate, Morton guided the creation and implementation of such programs as the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative, the Alabama Reading Initiative, the Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX) and ACCESS: Alabama Connecting Classrooms.
Each of the college's four departments recognized outstanding undergraduate and graduate students.
In the Department of Educational Foundations, Leadership and Technology, Selena Day (adult education) earned the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award, while Robin Taylor (educational psychology) earned the Outstanding Graduate Student Award.
The award winners in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching were John Nicholas Smith (undergraduate, music education) and Bethany Stewart (graduate, elementary education).
Lisa Vogel (undergraduate, exercise science) and Justin Shroyer (graduate, biomechanics) were honored by the Department of Kinesiology.
The Department of Special Education, Rehabilitation, Counseling/School Psychology selected Sara Dowling (undergraduate, collaborative teacher education) and Cynthia Vasilas (graduate, counselor education) for its awards.
