Education alum Morton receives State Policy Maker Award

November 10, 2008

Alabama State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton, a 1969 graduate of Auburn University's College of Education, has been selected for the 2008 State Policy Maker Award selected by the State Educational Technology Directors Association.

Dr. Morton guided the creation and implementation of a number of programs, including the Alabama Reading Initiative, the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative, ACCESS: Alabama Connecting Classrooms, Educators and Students Statewide and the Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX), which recently received a national "Best of the Web'' award. Morton also facilitated the expansion of advanced placement courses to every high school in the state through improved educational technology.

Morton received the 2008 State Policy Maker's Award on November 17 during an event in Washington, D.C. Founded in the fall of 2001, SETDA represents state directors for educational technology and focuses on using technology to improve student achievement.

"I am deeply humbled and grateful for this recognition to come to the state of Alabama," Morton said in a press release. "This award really honors the Alabama Department of Education and its incredibly dedicated and talented staff who envision and 'make happen' these innovative instructional programs for all of Alabama's students and teachers. We believe in doing everything we can and tapping into every available resource to provide educational excellence and equity for our students, regardless of a school's location or resources.''
