Strutchens receives inaugural AU Distinguished Diversity Researcher Award
July 9, 2008
Dr. Marilyn E. Strutchens, a professor in the Auburn University College of Education, received a 2008 Distinguished Diversity Researcher Award from the AU Research Initiative for the Study of Diversity
and the AU Office of Diversity and Multi-Cultural Affairs. Strutchens is a professor in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching's Mathematics Education program and co-director of TEAM-Math
.
Strutchens' primary research interests focus on factors that affect students' mathematics achievement, particularly among African-American students. Among the factors she studies are socio-economic status, access to mathematics courses, teachers' beliefs about students, parental influence, and students' expectations and beliefs. Her research goal is to develop ways of effecting positive change in mathematics achievement. As a result of that research, Strutchens is studying the effects of a program that uses multicultural literature as a context for mathematical problem solving, in which teachers facilitate parents and children learning mathematics together.
Strutchens and the other award recipients will give a lecture on their research at the celebration of Diversity Research, "Understanding Differences that Matter: Diversity Research at Auburn University," October 30-31, 2008, at The Auburn University Hotel and Dixon Conference Center.
Award winners will also be presented with an honorarium and plaque during the conference.
The AU Distinguished Diversity Researcher Awards, in their inaugural year, recognize diversity researchers in each of seven AU colleges and schools, which include Agriculture; Architecture, Design and Construction; Education; Engineering; Liberal Arts; and Sciences and Mathematics.
