August 2008

Dr. W. Gary Martin
Dr. Gary Martin
Dr. Gary Martin, a professor in the Auburn University College of Education, was among four faculty members named Academic Leadership Development fellows for the 2008-09 academic year by the Office of the Provost -- part of a program developed by the Southeastern Conference Academic Consortium  link to external web site.  Martin is a secondary mathematics professor in the college's Department of Curriculum and Teaching and TEAM-Math link to external web site  director.

The program is part of an effort by consortium member institutions, including Auburn, to offer training to tenured faculty members who are interested in future administrative positions such as graduate program chair, department head or chair, assistant or associate dean or other similar roles.

The fellows will attend two workshops during the academic year. The first will be in October at the University of South Carolina and the second will be in February at the University of Arkansas.

During the Spring 2008 semester, Martin served in the Office of the President as Auburn's first presidential faculty fellow.  There he worked on developing a proposal to establish a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics initiative at Auburn as part of a nationwide coalition widely known by its acronym, STEM.  He also assisted President Jay Gogue and Executive Vice President Don Large with administrative responsibilities and joined those executives in meetings with a cross section of Auburn constituents.

Martin joined the Auburn faculty in 2000 as an associate professor and following previous appointments as the director of research for the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and a faculty member at the University of Hawai'i.  He holds a doctorate in mathematics education from the University of Georgia and bachelor's in mathematics from Eastern Mennonite University.

Other fellows included Dr. Kathryn Flynn of the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, Dr. Bruce Smith of the College of Veterinary Medicine and Paula Sullenger of AU Libraries.
