Education awards more than 150 scholarships to undergraduate, graduate students
August 23, 2008
For the first time, undergraduate scholarships and graduate awards made by Auburn University's College of Education surpassed 150 as the college recently awarded more than $304,000 to students for the 2008-09 academic year. Thanks to the financial support of Education alumni and friends, scholarship opportunities increased by more than 30 additional awards and by more than $93,000 over awards made for the 2007-08 academic year.
The growing portfolio that provides support for students in the College of Education includes seven new scholarships and assistantships awarded this year: The Grant and Nancy Davis Scholarship for Education; R. Wayne McElrath Endowed Scholarship in Agriscience Education; The Honor Roll Scholarship; The Hatch Scientific Foundation Chemistry Teacher; Dr. Floreine G. Hudson Endowed Scholarship; Dr. Imogene Mathison Mixson Endowment for Administration of Higher Education; and the Mary L. Hall Floral and Horticultural Inspiration Award.
Dean Fran Kochan said that the award presentation ceremony, held annually since 2002, is as much about recognizing the investment in education made by donors as it is about the achievements of the students.
"Identifying and assisting so many deserving students is paramount for our college," Kochan said, "and is made possible by the generosity of donors. "We are delighted to honor those who have helped create an enduring legacy through the support of these student awards."
The college's seventh annual Scholarship Ceremony and Reception was held at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center on Saturday, August 23, 2008, with an attendance of more than 500 scholarship recipients, their families, and donors. The ceremony included a welcome from Dean Kochan and greetings from Auburn President Jay Gogue. Their remarks were followed by testimonials offered by donors Sue Atchison Pearson and Kay Hathway Jones, parent Rev. Robert H Sparkman and recipient Amber Dale Wright.
Some additional scholarships and graduate awards for the 2008-2009 academic year were awarded following the ceremony as funding for these awards became available.
Increasing financial support for students, as well as support for faculty and various programs within the college, is a priority within the college. With more than 2,300 students, the college has largest graduate enrollment and fifth-largest undergraduate enrollment on campus.
