Education names Munro '70 as 2006 Keystone Leader
 The College of Education has named Kathryn L. Munro '70 as its fourth Keystone Leader-in-Residence. Munro, who is a principal in San Diego-based BridgeWest, LLC, will visit the AU campus on Tuesday, Feb. 14.
Munro will conduct a public lecture at 1:45 p.m. in 3195 Haley Center. She will speak about her insights on leadership, the role of women in business and volunteerism in career development, and how her academic training in education serves her professionally today.
Before her current duties with BridgeWest, a private equity investment company specializing in wireless telecommunications infrastructure companies, Munro concluded a 20-year Bank of America career as CEO of its Southwest Banking Group. There, she was responsible for all business operations—commercial and retail—including $15 billion in deposits, 10,000 employees and 450 branches. She also directed Private Banking and Trust, Commercial Banking, Marketing and Teleservicing Operations for the Southwest.
Munro also served in the administration of former Washington State Governor Daniel Evans, where she specialized in developing long-range economic plans for the state.
Recently recognized as one of the top 25 leaders in Arizona throughout the past 25 years, she supports community, philanthropic, health, cultural, political and educational efforts through volunteer leadership and service. She serves as a director of several publicly traded companies, including Pinnacle West Capital Corporation (the holding company for the Arizona Public Service utility and Pinnacle West Energy); Capital Bancorp, a Michigan-based holding company with 40 community banks; and Knight Transportation. Munro serves as chairman of Flow International, a Seattle-based manufacturing company, as well.
Munro is an active supporter of women's athletics. In 2004, she became the first female owner of a WNBA team, the Phoenix Mercury.
A native of Bessemer, Alabama, Munro holds a bachelor's in general education from Auburn University and an MBA in finance from the University of Washington.
The College of Education's Keystone Leader-in-Residence program introduces students to proven leaders in education, human services, health services, community services and government. The program emphasizes that education— like the keystone of an arch—serves a central, supporting role in society. The college strives to develop committed, competent and reflective professionals who utilize education in building better futures for all.
