Jenkins '85 named 2005 Alabama Superintendent of the Year

The School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) has named Dr. J. Terry Jenkins of Auburn City Schools as Alabama 's 2005 Superintendent of the Year. Dr. Jenkins will represent Alabama in the National Superintendent of the Year program, sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators and ARAMARK ServiceMaster Facility Services. The national winner will be announced in late February at the ASSA Annual Conference in San Antonio , Texas.
 
Dr. Jenkins has served as superintendent of the Auburn City Schools System since 2000. He had retired after a 31-year career in education in Georgia—22 of those years as a superintendent. In 1998 he was named Georgia 's Superintendent of the Year. Prior to coming to Auburn , he served as the CEO of Georgia's School Superintendent Association for one year. Dr. Jenkins has a wide range of experience in education. He was a classroom teacher for five years, an elementary principal for two years, a high school principal for two years and now has been a superintendent for 26 years. He holds his doctorate in education from Auburn University ; a master's degree and an education specialist degree from West Georgia State University ; and a bachelor's degree from David Lipscomb University.
 
Not only is Dr. Jenkins a strong leader for the Auburn City School System, he is also a leader for the School Superintendents of Alabama, currently serving as the association's president-elect. Since 2002 through the end of this year, he is serving as the Legislative Committee chair for SSA and the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS). He serves as the Legislative Committee chair for SSA and the Council for Leaders in Alabama Schools Education Employees' Health Insurance Program, 2003-2005. Dr. Jenkins also shares his leadership skills in his community by serving as a board member of the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, the National Advisory Committee for the College of Education at Auburn University , and the Foundation for Auburn 's Continuing Enrichment in Schools (FACES). He has also been selected as a 2004-2005 participant in Leadership Alabama.
 
Because Dr. Jenkins is such a strong public education advocate and leader in SSA, he continues his professional development by attending district and state conferences of the SSA, CLAS, and the Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB). He also has attended the American Association of School Administrators National Conference on the Education and the Southeastern Superintendents Institute.
 
"Dr. Jenkins has been an active part of the SSA Board at the time the association restructured to increase the influence of school superintendents in policy development and to increase the effectiveness of the members. Dr. Jenkins is a highly regarded school superintendent in the state. He is considers a leader of leaders by his peers and by public officials in Alabama ," state SSA Executive Director Dr. Susan Lockwood said.
 
Nominations for the award were submitted from the regional districts of the School Superintendents of Alabama membership to a committee of educators and representatives of education. Other regional nominees for 2005 included Dr. James H. Cater, Selma City Schools ; Dr. Faron L. Hollinger, Baldwin County Schools ; Dr. Ann Roy Moore, Huntsville City Schools; and Dr. Cynthia C. Eisberry, Talladega County Schools.
 
The School Superintendents of Alabama (SSA) represents superintendents and school system leaders around the state, and is an affiliate of the Council of leaders in Alabama Schools (CLAS) and the state affiliate for the American Association of School Administrators.
