| Gomez receives national award
"Caroline Gomez was selected for this prestigious award based on her commendable efforts on behalf of this special needs population in terms of her research, publishing, policymaking, university instruction, and information dissemination," said her mentor Dr. Samera Baird, professor of special education. Gomez, who received her doctorate in August 2003, has focused her work and research on autism, and is now co-director of the Auburn Autism Center. Baird describes her as "an idea person who has the drive and ability to carry her innovative projects to fruition." "My life's work began 20 years ago with 2-year-old Daron in my arms," Gomez said. "He introduced me to autismperplexed meand won my heart. Since that moment, I have focused my life's work on making a positive difference in the lives of children with autism and their families." The award, which is given annually, will be presented to Gomez on Oct. 12, 2003, in Washington, D.C.
