Frequently Asked Questions for Students

How do I register for classes?
To register, students will login to AU Access and then select the tiger i tab.  Students will need to use their Auburn University username and password which will be available at Camp War Eagle for freshmen and SOS for transfer students.

How do I get a registration hold removed?
Registration holds can be placed by the Bursar, Student Health Services, your faculty advisor, or a PES Office advisor and can only be removed by the party placing the hold. You may check with a PES advisor to assist you in determining the source of the registration hold. You will then be directed to that source to clear the reason for the hold.

How do I add or drop a course?
You may add a course online using the tiger i tab in AU Access from the time of registration through the first day of classes. You may add a course from the 2nd day through the 15th day of the term by going to the department offering the course. (Note: Some departments will not add after the second or third day of the term.)  Should you need to add courses after the first 15 days of the term, complete a Schedule Adjustment Form and obtain the appropriate signatures. No student will be allowed to register for a course after the 15th day of the term without the approval of the Provost.

You may drop courses online or via the telephone through midterm with no academic penalty. Should you need to drop a course after midterm, complete a Schedule Adjustment Form and obtain appropriate signatures. If the form is used for dropping courses after midterm, the instructor must sign the form and a grade of W or WF must be assigned. A drop after midterm can result in your receiving an academic penalty.

If your intent is to drop all of your classes, you must "resign" from the university. To do this, go to 3464 HC and request a resignation form and a meeting with a PES advisor. You may resign at any point in the semester, but to avoid the penalty of failure you must resign before the midterm date.

How do I change my major?
To change your major within the College of Education , check out your file folder from 3464 Haley Center and take it to a PES advisor. The PES advisor will complete an evaluation that transfers your coursework from your previous program checklist to your new program checklist. You will be assigned a new faculty advisor and given a copy of the new program checklist.

To change your major to a program outside of the College of Education , go to 3464 Haley Center and tell an office assistant you want to transfer out of the College. You will be given your file folder and a Change of Major Form to take to the dean's office housing your new program.

How do I get a grade changed?
To clear an IN (incomplete) or change a final letter grade, the course instructor completes a Grade Revision Form and secures signatures from the department head and dean. An IN is calculated as an F until it is cleared. An IN must be cleared within six months or it becomes an F.

What is the Grade Adjustment Policy (GAP)?
You may delete, or GAP, a maximum of three course grades of D or F (including FA or U) associated with your undergraduate degree program from the computation of your AU cumulative GPA.

All core and major course requirements must be met for graduation. If deleted through GAP, required courses must be repeated at Auburn University .  All courses for which a grade has been assigned will remain on the transcript. However, the notation will appear that the work is not included in the GPA.

If you are interested in taking advantage of the Grade Adjustment Policy, go to the PES office, 3464 Haley Center , and ask to meet with a PES advisor.  Once you have applied the GAP to a course, it cannot later be restored.

How do I calculate my GPA?
Auburn University is on a four-point system. To calculate your GPA, add the total number of credit hours (minus any S/U hrs) and divide this number into the total number of quality points. To determine your total number of quality points, multiply the credit hours for each course by the numerical value of the grade for each course (A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F= 0). Add these numbers together and you will have your total number of quality points. See example below.

May I take courses elsewhere?
You may take courses at another institution provided equivalent courses are determined. You must meet in person with a PES advisor to complete a Transient Student Form. This form requires your signature and the Registrar's signature and seal.

If you are enrolled at Auburn University during any given term, you are expected to take courses only at Auburn . Only under extenuating circumstances and with prior permission from the dean may a student receive transfer credit toward an Auburn degree while concurrently enrolled at another college or university.

What is meant by "5-Way GPA"?
You must have a 5-way GPA of 2.5 or higher for admission, retention, and graduation in teacher education programs. The five ways are listed below:

Total Cumulative - all coursework attempted
AU Cumulative - all coursework at AU
Total Program - all coursework in your program
Professional - all coursework in the Professional Courses
Teaching Field - all courses designed as Teaching Field on your program checklist

The minimum 2.5 GPA calculated five ways is required for admission to Teacher Education, admission to internship, and graduation.

How do I get a credit check?
You are responsible for monitoring your progress throughout your program by following your program checklist. PES advisors conduct formal credit checks at three points in your program:

Admission to Teacher Education - When you apply for admission to Teacher Education, a PES advisor checks to make sure you have met all criteria then notifies you of your admission status.

Admission to Internship - When you apply for internship one year in advance, a PES advisor completes a credit check that identifies the criteria for admission to internship that are not  yet satisfied. The PES advisor sends you and your advisor a copy of the results of this credit check.

Graduation - When you apply to graduate, a PES advisor conducts a final credit check for graduation clearance. If any deficiencies are noted (e.g., incomplete grades, missing transcripts, transient work in progress, five-way GPA below 2.5, grade below "C" in a professional course), a PES advisor notifies you and the Registrar's Office. You will be cleared to graduate pending the completion of the deficiency.

May I be granted an exception to any normal procedure?
To request an exception to any normal procedure, go to 3464 Haley Center and request a Student Petition Form  PDF Icon. Petition forms cover requests for taking an overload, rescheduling a final examination, and any other requests related to exceptions to procedures.

May I substitute a course in my program?
If you want to substitute a course in your program, your faculty advisor must complete and sign a Course Substitution Request Form  PDF Icon. You must then obtain your department head's signature of approval and submit the form to 3464 Haley Center for the dean's approval. A copy of the completed form is placed in your permanent file folder.
