The Wayne T. Smith Distinguished Professorship was established in 1996 through the generosity of the Humana Foundation and in honor of Wayne T. Smith. Smith, the former chief operating officer of Humana, Inc., and a loyal College of Education alumnus, saw the need for the college to have such professorships to recruit, reward and retain outstanding professors in education. He desired for the college to be one of the elite educational institutions in the Southeast, not to mention the nation. Smith believed that bestowing such an honor on faculty to be essential to the success and growth of any premier institution. This distinguished professorship was the first of its kind in the college, and was first presented in 1998.
Wayne and his wife, Cheryl, are 1968 graduates of the College of Education. He has served the college in the past as a member of its National Advisory Council and its inaugural Keystone Leader-in-Residence. Today he is chairman, president and CEO of Tennessee-based Community Health Systems.
The year our distinguished professors were bestowed the Wayne T. Smith Distinguished Professorship is in parenthesis. Their years of service on the college faculty are indicated below their name.
