Leischuck Endowed Professorship for Critical Needs in Education
Established in 2007 and first awarded in 2008, the Emily R. and Gerald S. Leischuck Endowed Professorship for Critical Needs in Education equips the college to recruit and retain faculty in the most critical, understaffed disciplines in K-12 schools. Such focus will allow the college to remain adaptive and responsive to the needs for contemporary school systems and its students, while serving the profession by training future teachers in areas that are projected to experience personnel shortages.
The professorship was established by College of Education alumni Dr. Gerald and Mrs. Emily Leischuck, both 1964 graduates. Dr. Leischuck served in a variety of capacities during his 35-year Auburn career, retiring as secretary to the Board of Trustees. Mrs. Leischuck's 21-year Auburn career included appointments in Student Affairs, and as assistant to the Auburn president when she retired in 1995. As both alumni and emeriti Auburn administrators, the Leischuck's have proven on multiple occasions their love of Auburn and for the science of teaching. Teaching awards in both the College of Education and at the university level bear their names and recognize the best in teaching as a result of their support.
The professorship may be awarded to a faculty member at the associate or full professor level. The dean will review national, regional and statewide data every five years to determine if critical needs areas have changed and where to focus the professorship's resources in the future.
