Department of School and Counseling Psychology, Rehabilitation, Special Education and Counselor Education
 
The College of Education (COE) at Auburn University seeks an innovative and experienced leader to lead—pending administrative approval from the Auburn University Board of Trustees—the newly formed Department of School and Counseling Psychology, Rehabilitation, Special Education and Counselor Education. The merger of two departments will result in new opportunities for cross-disciplinary initiatives while maintaining the success of highly successful academic programs. The new department head will work with department faculty to create an inclusive vision and mission in support of the college's strategic plan. Significant new initiatives are currently underway in the COE to increase research, outreach scholarship and international programs. 
The department's degree offerings include undergraduate, master's and doctoral degrees in special education and rehabilitation counseling, as well as master's and doctoral degrees in counselor education, school psychology and counseling psychology. Programs have a long history of U.S. Department of Education funding for innovative training and outreach activities. The department consists of 20 tenure-track faculty and five support staff. Details about each department as currently organized is available in the Academic Departments section of education.auburn.edu.
 
Position Description

This position is a 12-month administrative position in the College of Education. The department head will be responsible for overall leadership and administration of the department, including oversight of academic programs, faculty review, course scheduling, budget, support of faculty productivity and professional development, and facilitation of innovation.  The department head serves on the Dean's Administrative Council and is a member of the COE leadership team. 

Minimum Qualifications
  • a doctoral degree from an accredited university, with a specialty in one of the teaching areas represented within the department
  • a distinguished record of scholarship and teaching that would merit appointment as a tenured professor in an area represented within the department
  • administrative experience in an academic unit
  • experience with faculty development and evaluation
  • excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • demonstrated commitment to educational and cultural needs of diverse populations
  • must meet eligibility requirements to work in the U.S. at the time appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for proposed term of employment
  • ability to communicate effectively in English
Desired Qualifications
  • demonstrated commitment to and success in a shared governance model
  • success with interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach activities
  • success as a principal investigator or co-investigator on a federally funded project.
Starting Date

Negotiable, but prefer August 2008

Salary

Competitive; commensurate with experience and qualifications.
