Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) Overview

Student Teaching Abroad
If you are adventurous, academically able, independent, and ambitious, completing your teaching internship abroad offers an opportunity to broaden your outlook on the work and to expand your future professional possibilities, Through this experience you will gain greater sensitivity to other cultures, a more informed perspective on the United States' role in the world, greater appreciation for your own heritage, and increase self-confidence from having successfully dealt with new and challenging situations. All these qualities are much needed in today's teachers.

Auburn University is an active member of the Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) an association that places teacher candidates (interns) in schools in foreign countries to fulfill student teaching requirements.

Locations
Placements are made in selected schools in Australia , Canada , Costa Rica , England , Ecuador , Greece , Ireland , Mexico , New Zealand , Scotland , and South Africa .

Placements
In English speaking countries, student teachers (interns) are placed in local schools. School curriculum follows national models. Pupils are from the local community.

In non-English speaking countries, student teachers (interns) are placed in independent International or American schools. These are non-profit, non-denominational, private schools established for the purpose of providing bilingual instruction to prepare pupils for entrance into colleges or universities in the United States or in a number of other countries. COST interns teach their classes in English. The curriculum follows American (U.S.) or Western European models in various combinations. The curriculum of the host country is addressed, as well.

Supervision
Supervision of internship is provided by the director or principal of the COST school, a senior teacher or other educator especially employed for this purpose, and/or professor from a COST member institution.

Eligibility
Students must apply for student teaching (internship) one year in advance of the intended student teaching semester. All Auburn University standard eligibility requirements must be met in order to participate in the program. In addition, candidates must maintain a 3.0 grade point average and submit three letters of recommendation.

Expenses
Program participants pay an application and a supervision fee to COST, Auburn University Study Abroad tuition, transportation, and living expenses. Living expenses vary depending on location and type of housing available. Possibilities for housing include living with a family, sharing an apartment with other students or teachers, and dormitory housing. Other financial factors to consider are those associated with the many cultural opportunities available while abroad.
