Degree Types
Following is a brief explanation of the different degrees offered in the College of Education . See Academic Programs Listing for information about specific programs. 
 
Bachelors of Science (B.S.). This baccalaureate degree is earned by all students completing an undergraduate program with the exception of Music Education.
Bachelors of Music Education (B.M.E.). This baccalaureate degree is earned by undergraduate students in Music Education.
The Master of Education (M.Ed.) and the Master of Science (M.S.). Students in most master's degree programs may choose to complete an M.Ed. degree (non-thesis option) or a M.S. degree (thesis option). In addition, some advanced teacher certification programs offer alternative and traditional options.   
  • Alternative master's certification programs offer qualified students who hold non-teaching baccalaureate degrees a route to initial teacher certification while simultaneously earning a master's degree.  
  • Traditional master's certification programs provide qualified students who hold initial teacher certification an opportunity to build on and extend their knowledge and expertise.  
Specialist in Education Programs (Ed.S.). This degree is designed for professionals in education and human service areas who want increased competence in a field of specialization. Ed.S. programs consist of a minimum of 30 hours beyond a master's degree. 
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). See program links for specific information regarding doctoral degrees.
