Auburn University invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for an outstanding professional to lead the College of Education as Wayne T. Smith distinguished professor and dean.

The dean of education serves as chief academic and administrative officer for the College and reports directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs  link to external web site.  The dean is responsible for executing the college's strategic plan through a collaborative environment that includes faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, and school and community partners. 

Responsibilities

As dean, the successful candidate will be responsible for
  • leading the college in pursuit of the college and university's shared values (e.g., diversity, scholarship, instruction, research and outreach), vision, mission, and goals
  • strongly representing all departments and programs within the college and advancing both teacher education and non-teacher certification programs inside and outside of the university
  • recruiting, advocating for, and enhancing opportunities for quality students, faculty, and staff
  • ensuring that next generation technologies are integrated into instructional and professional practices
  • creating a climate for faculty to excel in scholarly teaching, research, and outreach
  • encouraging faculty and students to consistently broaden their world views through an increased focus on international programming
  • leading and aggressively promoting alumni and development efforts to meet current and future college priorities
  • working with all departments to ensure that graduates are competent, committed, and reflective professionals well prepared to meet the challenges and demands of today's changing world.

Qualifications

  • a doctorate in education or related field
  • distinguished record of accomplishment in teaching, research, outreach, extramural funding, and professional service sufficient to qualify for distinguished full professor with tenure
  • experience with and knowledge of P-12 classroom teaching, administration, or other direct work with children, youth or adults
  • ability to aid faculty in establishing a strong program of research and extramural funding
  • ability to engage in the national dialogue on the professional preparation of educators, clinicians, and specialists
  • proven administrative skills including budgeting, leadership, and communication
  • demonstrated commitment to and promotion of diversity and multicultural engagement
  • collegial work style and commitment to shared governance among all college constituencies
  • a high degree of personal and professional integrity

The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time of the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of the appointment. 

About the College of Education

With enrollment totaling more than 2,600 students, the College of Education touts the university's largest graduate enrollment and fifth-largest undergraduate enrollment, among the university's 13 colleges and schools  link to external web site.  Students are served through 93 full-time faculty and 45 regular, full-time staff.  The college offers 23 undergraduate degrees and 36 graduate degrees through four academic departments: Curriculum and Teaching; Educational Foundations, Leadership and Technology; Kinesiology; and Special Education, Rehabilitation, Counseling/School Psychology.  Additional units, including the Learning Resources Center, Office of Research and Innovation, and Truman Pierce Institute provide and enrich student learning and faculty performance.  In addition to being reaccredited by NCATE in 2007, the college and its academic departments and programs hold eight additional accreditations or endorsements.  In its 2010 "Best Graduate Schools" publication, U.S. News and World Reports ranked the college 71st nationally, 50th among public schools, and 24th among land-grant schools of education.  Instructional efforts are bolstered by the college's extramurally funded research and outreach, which for 2008-09 included $4.8 million in new or supplemented awards.
