Mentor Support Sessions

Personnel in the Truman Pierce Institute, through funded provided by the Leadership for Effective Academic Reform Now (LEARN) Grant, held three regional Mentoring Support Sessions offering teacher leaders currently serving as mentors in their school systems the opportunity to receive additional support and training in September 2008. Mentors had the option of attending a support session on September 5th at the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center, September 9th at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa AL or on September 12th at the Renaissance Hotel in Montgomery. The professional development sessions were designed to supplement mentoring training provided by the state through the regional inservice centers and to offer practical resources to aid teacher mentors in the mentoring process in their schools. Research indicates the importance of mentoring the first year teacher to aid with induction and retention. Each support session highlighted key practices of an effective mentor, the stages of mentoring, along with examining key areas of concern for the teacher mentors.
