Student Tracking Report: A Sample

Tracking Alabama's youth and young adults with disabilities is a major line of programmatic research (and service to the state) being conducted through the Auburn Transition Institute. Since 1996, the Institute, in concert with the state department of special education, has developed this Student Tracking System that monitors a sizable sample of current and former secondary special students about their career goals and aspirations, as well as their post school barriers and successes.

During the 2002-2003 year, an online survey form was piloted for the in-school and post-school (one year out) information. Over 200 of Alabama's high schools responded, representing 44 of its public school systems. Data has been electronically obtained on 1,155 11th graders and 375 former students one year out. This brings the total cumulative number to 11,845 (8,522 in-schoolers, and 3,323 post-schoolers).

This research provides a sound basis for program improvement in public school systems, as well as an index of educational accountability beyond the school years. Its significance and timeliness is evidenced by the fact that a federal initiative is currently underway for all states to consider developing similar systems to track their students, In essence, Alabama's system has been made possible through the Institute and continues to gain national prominence as an important and viable strategy for educational program evaluation.
