Kinesiology
Welcome to the Department of Kinesiology

The Department of Kinesiology offers degrees in both teaching and non-teaching fields. Within the teaching field, our graduates receive certification at the K-12 level from the State of Alabama. As the College of Education is an NCATE-accredited  teacher preparation institution, we are dedicated to ensuring that our graduates enter their chosen profession as competent, committed and reflective professional, as outlined by our Conceptual Framework.

coliseumWhile we do offer programs in teacher certification, our mission is more broadly defined. Essentially, we hold to what is described as an "interventionist" model. That is, everything that we do in teaching, research and public service is directed toward enhancing individuals' abilities to move and be physically active.

Our instructional areas of exercise science, health promotion, and physical education teacher preparation allow us to prepare students who will in turn "intervene" with students, patients, and others in school, hospital and industry settings.  Our research and extension efforts run the gamut, but, they too, are all linked in the sense that they are about improving health or human performance. The specific programs, faculty and facilities that describe us more fully follow in our web site. To read about our most recent developments, link from here to our annual report.

The Department of Kinesiology also offers a university wide Physical Actvity and Wellness Program that is available to all students across campus. Particularly attractive to those students who enjoy physical activity, the program combines study of the basic principles of wellness with participation in a broad range of physical activity categories.
