| Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantships General Graduate School Information
All graduate assistant appointments are temporary. To qualify for a graduate assistantship, a student must be in a graduate degree-seeking program and registered for a minimum of one course during each term of the assistantship. Graduate students may hold multiple assistantships and the assistantships may come from different units on campus, but together cannot add up to more than a 1.0 FTE (100 percent) appointment. It is recommended that graduate students carrying a full academic load not hold more than a 0.5 FTE (half-time) appointment.
Immigration regulations limit graduate assistantships for international graduate students to no more than a 0.5 FTE (50 percent) work appointment during the fall and spring semesters. During the summer term, however, international graduate assistants may hold appointments adding up to a 1.0 FTE, unless the summer term is the student's first or last term at Auburn, when the student is again restricted to no more than 0.5 FTE appointment. Please contact the Office of International Education for additional information.
Non-Alabama resident graduate assistants may receive an out-of-state tuition waiver if they are on at least a 25 percent graduate assistantship and are paid a minimum monthly stipend set each year by the Provost. Such graduate assistants who have been on assistantship for at least two consecutive semesters will automatically have their out-of-state tuition waived for the next semester whether or not they are on assistantship that semester.
For additional information, please refer to the "Graduate School - Graduate Assistantships" section within the Auburn University Undergraduate and Graduate Bulletin.
Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA): Duties are essential to a teaching function; appointment level varies; tuition waiver provided.
Graduate Research Assistant (GRA): Duties are administrative in nature and provide non-teaching or research support functions; appointment level varies; does not provide tuition waiver.
An individual could fulfill a combination of the GTA and GRA duties; however, would be eligible for the tuition waiver ONLY if classified as a GTA.
