Master of Education Degree - Library Media

Add-On Certification - Library Media

1.	Apply and get admitted to the program.
2.	Complete fingerprinting requirement prior to enrollment.
3.	Submit your graduate transcript(s) for existing A-level teacher certification for evaluation to determine courses required for certification. Work with academic advisor to prepare an approved program of study. This should be done before enrolling the first semester.
4.	Complete all required course work on the program of study with a minimum 3.0 GPA on all courses carrying graduate credit and all courses in the library media certification program. Must have grade of "C" or better on all courses carrying graduate credit. Consult with your academic advisor when selecting courses each semester.
5.	Complete a 300-clock hour internship in K-12 settings under the supervision of a certified library media specialist. Internship is one of the last classes taken. The deadline for applying for an internship placement for a given semester is mid-term of the previous semester (e.g., internship for fall semester must be approved mid-term of the previous summer semester). Contact Dr. Susan Bannon for more specific information about internship requirements and deadlines. Complete the Graduate Field Experience Request Form.
6.	Pass the Praxis II examination for library media. Passing score is 600.
7.	Pass a final comprehensive examination. The deadline for the library media final  comprehensive examination usually takes place mid-November for fall semester, mid-April for spring semester, and mid-July for summer term. Consult your advisor for specific scheduling of the comprehensive examination.
8.	Submit all required applications, paperwork and appropriate fees to the Alabama State Department for library media certification application. Contact Kathryn Burnett in the Professional Education Services Center, 3464 Haley Center, for assistance with this step.

Education Specialist Degree - Library Media

1.	Apply and get admitted to the program.
2.	Complete fingerprinting requirement prior to enrollment.
3.	Prepare an approved Plan of Study and file with the Graduate School. This should be done at the beginning of second semester of course work.
4.	Complete all required course work on the approved Plan of Study with a minimum 3.0 GPA on all courses carrying graduate credit and a minimum of a 3.25 GPA on all courses required for library media certification program at AA-level. Must have grade of "C" or better on all course work carrying graduate credit. For the Education Specialist degree in library media, all course work must be completed within 5 years of the intended graduation date. Consult with your academic advisor when selecting courses each semester.
5.	Successfuly complete 6-semester hours of directed field experience under the supervision of your acadmeic advisor and education specialist committee. The directed field experience involves action research and at a minimum should be taken in two consecutive semesters. Complete the Graduate Field Experience Request Form.
6.	Make changes to Plan of Study filed with Graduate School before the beginning of the final semester; substitutions for required courses in library media certification must be pre-approved using the College of Education's Course Substitution Request and filed with Professional Education Services, 3464 Haley Center.
7.	Apply for Graduation Check (credit check) to the Graduate School one semester before graduation. Application deadline for Graduation Check is graduation day each semester.
