K-12 Master's Instructional Leadership Preparation (ILP) Program

Our Mission
 
The mission of the Auburn University Instructional Leadership Preparation Program is to prepare engaged, collaborative and effective leaders of learning through the integration of theory, reflection and applied leadership opportunities.  The program integrates school leadership as an intellectual, moral and craft practice.

Auburn University has one of only three approved redesigned Master's degree programs in Instructional Leadership for School Principals.  Using a cohort format co-taught by field-based instructional leaders and university faculty, Auburn University Instructional Leadership candidates will engage in a preparation program that is sequential, developmental and comprehensive. 
The program offers regular opportunities to integrate theory and practice.  The program encompasses seven themes:
  • Collaboration and communication
  • Reflective practice
  • Data-driven decision making
  • Inclusiveness
  • Technology
  • Leadership disposition development
  • Enhancing learning community
Partner School Districts: Alexander City ; Auburn City ; Lee County ; Lowndes County ; Macon County ; Opelika City ; and Tallapoosa County .

Our Students

 

The program will prepare educators to be instructional administrators and leaders in a K-12 setting.  It features collaboration, shared decision-making processes, and a focus on student learning and achievement.

 Course of Study

 

Students enrolling in the Instructional Leadership Preparation Program will benefit from a combination of classroom-based instruction and practical experience.  A total of 33 to 36* semester hours of classroom instructional and internship will be taught by and in combination with field-based professionals serving as coaches and mentors.  Course topics will include:
  •  Principal leadership
  •  Action research and analysis
  •  Leadership and the learning organization
  •  Planning and continuous improvement
  •  Instructional and curricular leadership
  •  Financial resource management
  •  Educational systems and communities
  •  Legal and ethical issues
  •  Human resources and supervision
Students will derive the remainder of academic credit in the program from school-based days of internship/residency in one of the program's partner school district school settings.  These will range from five to 10 days each semester depending on the semester of enrollment.  The internship will provide field-based experiences that integrate academic knowledge through observing, participating and leading various learning experiences while working side by side with successful school leaders.

The Two-Step Application Process

 

Step 1: Graduate School Application

Complete and submit an online Graduate School application at www.grad.auburn.edu

Paper-based applications may be obtained by contacting the Auburn University Graduate School at 334.844.4700.  The following list includes additional documentation required by the Graduate School :
  • Submission of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, taken within the past five years.  The ETS institution code for Auburn University is 1005.
  • Submission of official undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all previous colleges and universities (1 copy).
  • Payment of application fee.

Step 2: K-12 Educational Leadership Admission Requirements/Process.  Applicants must:

  • Hold a Class B Professional Educator Certificate in a teaching field or a Class A Professional Educator Certificate in a teaching field or instructional support area;
  • Have a minimum of three full years of full-time, satisfactory professional educational experience in a P-12 setting, which must include P-12 experience;  
  • Submit an admission portfolio before an interview;
  • Attend an informational meeting;
  • Write an on-site essay and participate in an individual interview w/university faculty / partner school districts;
  • Commit to an intense cohort experience lasting four consecutive semesters; and,
  • Agree to participate in pre-, ongoing, and post-program evaluations and assessments.
