Higher Education Programs

The Higher Education programs prepare individuals for responsibilities in post-secondary environments such as administrators, faculty members, academic advisors, and officers in colleges, universities, and associations.  There is a Higher Education Master's (M.Ed.) and doctorate (Ed.D.) available.

Master's Degree

The Master's (M.Ed.) degree (36 hours) is designed to prepare individuals interested in higher education administration in a college or university. Coursework is designed to examine practices, policies, and current issues in American higher education as well as develop skilled and knowledgeable professionals for positions of responsibility as practitioners in higher education and student affairs administration.

Sport Management Minor

The Higher Education program with a minor in Sport Management consists of 36 semester hours, structured in conformity with the curriculum requirements of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM). A five course (15 hours) core of adult and higher education classes includes: human resource management in higher education, organization and financial management in higher education, legal issues in higher education, overview of post secondary education, and nature of adult education. In addition to this core, a three hour class in basic methods of education research is required.

The 18 hours of sport courses are distributed among sport management, sociology of sport, sport finance and marketing, sport ethics and public relations, and practicum in athletic administration. In the practicum experience, the students benefit from the expertise of senior administrators in Auburn athletics. The content of practicum addresses student-athlete academic support, finance, compliance with NCAA rules, gender equity and diversity, and event management.

Sport management at Auburn attracts a national representation of students, with backgrounds in athletic administration, athletic training, coaching, and other areas. Our graduates have secured employment in leading universities and in professional sport organizations. Indeed in the collaboration between academic programs and athletics, one finds the warp and weft of Auburn

Dr. George Petrie served Auburn as professor of history and Latin, founded the graduate school at Auburn, authored The Auburn Creed, and coached the university's first football team. Cliff Hare was a member of that first football team. Hare went on to become professor of chemistry at Auburn, as well as president of the Southern Conference, predecessor body to the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Auburn 's football stadium bears his name.  Petrie wrote in The Auburn Creed, "I believe in a sound mind in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities." Hare observed that "Athletics make men strong, study makes men wise, and character makes men great." These historic principles guide sport management at Auburn and propel our quest for national leadership in the study of sport management.

Doctor of Education

The purpose of the Ed.D. Higher Education program (97 hours) is to prepare leaders to understand and apply research, policy, and practices in the higher education field.  This program provides courses and experiences in the area of higher education to prepare individuals for roles such as administrators, educational leaders, researchers, policy makers, and faculty members.
