The Secondary Social Science Education program will prepare you to teach all social studies subjects in grades 6-12. As a major in our program you will be mentored by program faculty as well as master social studies teachers who partner with us in the Persistent Issues in History Network (pihnet.org), an Auburn University-based professional community of practice.
What will I learn?
Our program philosophy and conceptual framework are built upon a vision of civic competence articulated by the National Council for the Social Studies: "The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world." Course work provides the content knowledge, the pedagogical knowledge and skills, and the guided practice in public schools that prospective teachers need to become competent, committed, and reflective professionals. Graduate studies extend these experiences to develop leaders in the field of social studies education. The on-line resources of the PIH Network provide graduates with a continuing source of teaching resources and support as they move forward in their careers.
