Statement of Purpose
 

The Secondary Social Science master's degree program prepares knowledgeable teacher-leaders for grades 6-12. Course work in the social sciences disciplines and Professional Education expands teachers' knowledge, abilities, and competencies for planning and implementing powerful instruction that is grounded in a professional knowledge base. Program graduates are eligible for advanced master's level (A-level) certification.

 

Our program philosophy and conceptual framework are built upon a vision of civic competence articulated by the National Council for the Social Studies: "The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world."
