Statement of Purpose

The Specialist in Education degree is designed for professional educators who wish to enhance their competence in Social Science Education. Course work beyond the master's level in the social sciences disciplines and Professional Education expands professional educators' knowledge, abilities, and competencies for teaching and leadership in secondary and postsecondary settings. Degree candidates must design, implement, report, and defend a field project that addresses a practical problem related to Social Science Education. Program graduates are eligible for advanced (AA-level) certification in Alabama and equivalent level certification in other states.

Our program philosophy and conceptual framework are built upon a vision of civic competence articulated by the National Council for the Social Studies: "The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world."
