| B.S. Social Science Education Areas of Specialization
Statement of Purpose
The Secondary Social Science program prepares Social Studies teachers for grades 6-12. Course work in the social sciences provides the knowledge teachers need to teach the social studies courses at the secondary school level. Course work in Professional Education provides the theory-based knowledge, the pedagogical knowledge and skills, and the monitored practice in public schools that prospective teachers need to become competent, committed, and reflective professionals.
Our program philosophy and conceptual framework are built upon a vision of civic competence articulated by the National Council for the Social Studies: "The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world."
