B.S. Mathematics Education

Statement of Purpose

The goal of the Mathematics Education program is to prepare reflective and highly qualified middle school and high school teachers of mathematics. Since both mathematics and mathematics education are evolving disciplines and central to the preparation of mathematics teachers, a strong preparation in each is required. The coursework incorporates field-based experiences and attention to technology. This preparation provides a conceptual knowledge basis for prospective teachers to make decisions regarding middle and high school mathematics curricula, instructional strategies, and evaluation techniques required in today's schools, and to continue to develop their knowledge of mathematics and mathematics education.

Specifically, the purposes of the undergraduate program in Mathematics Education are to:

  1. Prepare state certified teachers for classroom teaching positions in public schools, grades 6-12, who are able to plan and execute instruction that reflects a sound knowledge of mathematics, the school mathematics curriculum, and student thinking in order to promote students' understanding of mathematics.
  2. Promote the development of reflective practice and professionalism in teacher candidate interactions with students, parents, and colleagues.
  3. Promote teacher candidates' continued development of a research-based, student- centered, and inquiry approach to teaching mathematics.
