| B.S. English Language Arts Education Statement of Purpose
This program prepares undergraduate majors to teach English Language Arts in grades 6-12, to direct extracurricular activities in speech and theater, and to serve as sponsors of student publications. In keeping with NCTE guidelines for preparing teachers, we encourage prospective teachers in our program to integrate the language arts in their teaching, for example, to design activities that will require their future students to engage in multiple language arts. We view the language artseven those labeled "receptive" (reading, listening, and viewing)as constructive processes. We challenge prospective teachers to acknowledge how complex are the processes of producing text and constructing meaning from text; how predicated they are on expectations, purposes, prior knowledge, and past experience; and how influenced they are by the social context and factors such as race, gender, ethnic identity, and class.
