McCormick Fall 04Theresa M. McCormick is an Associate Professor of Social Studies Elementary Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Auburn University.  She presently serves as the program coordinator for the Elementary Education program.  Dr. McCormick joined the faculty at Auburn University in the fall of 2004.  She came to Auburn from The University of Alabama where she was a Teacher-In-Residence teaching Elementary Education undergraduates courses.  For 12 years she taught fifth and sixth grade social studies.  Her publications have appeared in Social Education, Social Studies and the Young Learner, Social Studies Research and Practice, Journal of Research in Education, Journal of Social Studies Research and The International Journal of Social Education.  She actively promotes social studies education for the purpose of preparing citizens for the 21st century at the state and national level.  Her areas of academic interest and expertise include the development of historical thinking, classroom contexts for teaching history and the social studies, reflective and professional decision making of elementary teacher candidates, and teacher professional development.

Currently, Dr. McCormick is project director of Project REACH (Reclaiming Educators' and Children's Hope).  Project REACH is a joint effort with the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, the East Alabama Regional Inservice Center, the Auburn City School system, and Lanett City School system to provide a yearlong professional development project for in-service and pre-service teachers of culturally diverse students.  Project REACH is a collaborative effort to cultivate in-service and pre-service teachers' specialized pedagogical knowledge and skills for teaching students from culturally diverse backgrounds.
