About the Department

Statement of Purpose
The purpose of the undergraduate programs in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching is to prepare state certified teachers for classroom teaching positions in grades K-12 who can develop and plan effective lessons and units which allow for individual differences in abilities and interests among a diverse group of students. The graduate degrees offered within the department allow practicing teachers to seek advanced certification and professional growth as they continue to develop a theory-based educational philosophy that reflects a clear knowledge and understanding of research-based practices. Doctoral programs prepare teacher educators for colleges and universities and provide subject specialists for local, state, and federal agencies. At all levels of education, emphasis is placed on preparing competent, committed, and reflective professionals.  Close relationships with local schools allow faculty members to work as partners on a variety of school-based projects and support services.
The following professional practices are reflected in the department's purpose:
  • Prepare "highly qualified" state-certified teachers for classroom teaching              positions in public schools for grades K-12.
  • Promote the development of reflective practice and professionalism in teacher   candidates' and teachers' interactions with children, parents, and colleagues.
  • Model effective use of technology in appropriate ways.
  • Facilitate teacher candidates' and teachers' continued development of cutting-  edge research-based understandings, educational philosophy, and reflective practice.
  • Foster principles that incorporate appreciation and support of human dignity,     diversity, and equal opportunities for all.
  • Ground course content in current research, national standards, and the Alabama Course of Study.
